Itinerary 5 Day Tour Departing from
Edinburgh
5 days to enjoy
the magic of the islands of Mull, Iona and Staffa
and the wilderness of the northern Highlands around
Ullapool. Highlights also include Loch Lomond,
Eilean Donan Castle and Loch Ness for a great
sample of the best of Scotland.
Day
1
takes you west to Glasgow, then north along the
full length of Loch Lomond, stopping at the
charming conservation village of Luss set on the
loch's "bonny, bonny banks". You will travel
through the impressive mountains of the West
Highlands passing the romantic ruin of Kilchurn
Castle, set at the head of Loch Awe before arriving
in Oban. Here we catch the ferry to the Isle of
Mull, staying in your chosen accommodation for 2
nights in the beautiful harbour town of
Tobermory.
Day
2 is an
island adventure exploring the dramatic coastlines
and wild beauty of Mull before taking the small
ferry to the peace and tranquility of Iona -
birthplace of Celtic Christianity and ancient
burial ground of Scottish Kings. Here you can visit
the historic abbey with its intricate carved
crosses in the churchyard or explore the rocky
headlands and sandy coves of this island gem. There
is also an opportunity to take a small boat out to
the island of Staffa and view the dramatic basalt
columns immortalised by Mendelssohn in his
Hebridean Overture "Fingalls Cave". Stay again in
Tobermory.
Day
3 takes
you north over the sound of Mull to Loch Linnhe and
Fort William, then out west through the dramatic
mountain scenery of the 5 Sisters of Kintail to the
sea. Here you can visit Eilean Donan Castle (set of
the film "Highlander") with fabulous views over to
the Isle of Skye. We turn north again through the
splendour of Loch Carron and Wester Ross to the
fishing village of Ullapool where we stay for 2
nights.
Day
4 takes
you 'off the beaten track' to explore the
magnificent, remote and wild setting of the
Inverpolly Nature Reserve. Here you will find some
of Scotland's most distinctive mountains - Suilven,
Stac Pollaidh and Canisp. Also the white sandy
beaches around Achiltibuie and the traditional
crofting community of Assynt.
Day
5 The
last day returns you back south, but not before
doing a bit of monster spotting at mystical Loch
Ness. We continue south down the Loch to Fort
Augustus, then travel through the Grampian
mountains past Loch Laggan to Pitlochry. From here,
we sadly bid farewell to the Highlands as we return
you to Edinburgh.
