Highland
Lakes and Lochs
A journey through the Celtic heartlands in the
central Highlands taking in the waterfalls in
Birnam forest, Pitlochry, the Queen's View and the
splendour of Loch Tay, an area abundant with
standing stone circles. Depart Edinburgh and travel
north over the Forth Road Bridge. Up the M90,
passing Loch Leven where Mary Queen of Scots was
held prisoner and later escaped. Continue past
Perth, an ancient capital of Scotland, stopping in
the Macbeth Visitor Centre at Bankfoot. Continue
north to the Hermitage, set in Shakespeare's Birnam
Wood. You can take a walk here, with your
driver/guide, along the River Braan , through the
forest, and into the folly overlooking the
cascading waterfalls. This is a migratory route for
salmon, which can often be seen leaping up the
falls. The Hermitage is named after Ossian, a
Celtic poet. You can even go inside the cave that
he lived in. Pitlochry for lunch. You have an hour
here to explore the town before continuing north
towards Killiecrankie to the Queen's View
overlooking Loch Tummel. Lately named after Queen
Victoria who was a great lover of the Highlands,
although it is believed Isabella, Robert the
Bruce's wife first relished the view. We now go
over General Wade's old bridge and down to
Keltneyburn. We pass Fortingall, home to the Yew,
the oldest piece of vegetation in Europe and
supposedly Pontius Pilate's birthplace! Past Glen
Lyon and along Loch Tay, named after Tatha, the
Celtic river Goddess. We travel along the shores of
this beautiful loch to Killin to view the falls of
the River Dochart. Down through Glen Dochart now
with views to the old railway viaduct and the
mountains beyond. Passing Loch Earn and Loch
Luibnaig, we make a last refreshment stop in
Callander, then back to Edinburgh, passing
Linlithgow Palace and Stirling Castle on the way.
