Suggested Itineraries Departing from Edinburgh

West Highlands and Castles A fantastic day out in the heart of the scenic Western Highlands taking in the superb ruins of Kilchurn Castle, stunningly situated at the head of Loch Awe and Inveraray Castle, home to the Duke of Argyll. Depart Edinburgh and travel west, past Stirling Castle and Doune Castle, stopping in Callander. Afterwards we cross into the Highlands and along Loch Luibnaig, Loch Earn and through Glen Ogle and Glen Dochart. We turn west at Tyndrum through Glen Lochy to Dalmally. Under the shadow of Ben Cruachan, we stop at the Glenorchy Lodge Hotel for lunch. We then continue a short distance west to Scotland's longest loch, Loch Awe and take a walk out to the spectacular ruins of Kilchurn Castle, set right at the head of the Loch. This castle was a stronghold of the Clan Campbell and the views are stunning in all directions. We then turn south to Inveraray, an 18th century whitewashed village set on the shores of sea Loch Fyne. The Adam brothers who designed the town were also the architects responsible for Edinburgh's New Town. Here we can visit Inveraray Castle, the home of the Duke of Argyll, chief of the Clan Campbell. The castle is of neo-Gothic style, set in it's own grounds with views over the Loch. There are many other attractions here to visit such as the 19th century jail, museum ship and the Bell Tower. You can be dropped off in the town if you prefer. We depart Inveraray and head south along Loch Fyne. This sea loch is renowned for it's fine seafood and you will see the oyster beds, salmon and trout farms along the way. We drive down the Rest and be Thankful, named by the soldiers who built the original road in the 18th century. As you look down this pass, you will see it was very aptly named! We travel round another sea loch, Loch Long with it's history of Viking raiders and wind our way down to Loch Lomond, stopping at Luss, set on the "bonny, bonny banks". Luss is a charming wee conservation village with traditional estate workers cottages lining the road. You can take a stroll down to the Loch with fantastic views over to Ben Lomond. Return to Edinburgh stopping for photos underneath Stirling Castle.(10 Hours)
